Implementation
P.E. is taught at Sketchley Hill Primary School as an area of learning in its own right, as well as being integrated where possible with other curriculum areas using schemes such as ‘Active Learn’ to aid teachers in implementing this in the classroom.

It is taught at a minimum of one PE session a week, and two sessions per week wherever possible. The key knowledge and skills of each topic are mapped across each year group. This ensures that children develop their knowledge of games, dance and gymnastics and (from KS2) athletics, competitive sports and outdoor and adventurous activity progressively. The skills in these areas are also therefore developed systematically, with the programme of study for each year group building on previous learning and preparing for subsequent years. The use of the Real PE scheme allows clear progression both within the year group and throughout the school, enabling the achievement of key stage end points, as informed by the 2014 National Curriculum.

We teach lessons so that children:
  • Develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.
  • Engage in co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
  • Apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement.
  • Enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing both against self and against others.
  • Develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports.
  • Learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Lessons are delivered by both class teachers and sports coaches (SiSports) utilising cross curricular links throughout its delivery where possible.

Real PE is an inclusive approach with the ambition that PE is a positive experience for EVERY child. It teaches children Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) and key learning behaviours to help achieve that ambition. The ambitious real PE curriculum enables all children to flourish and experience success throughout their primary school phase. Through a carefully planned and sequenced curriculum, which starts in EYFS, children build, revisit, and develop skills and knowledge as they progress through school, thereby developing a strong sense of self-efficacy. Real PE is a curriculum that includes: l structured and progressive physical development challenges l skill application opportunities that involve rules l strategies and tactics that are age and stage appropriate l integrated review sessions that focus on healthy participation. These enable children to progress and know ‘how’ to get better at PE. Real PE foundations, core real PE, real gym and real dance provide opportunities for physical actions to be modelled, practised and developed. The structured lesson plans allow time for pupils to reflect, review and refine, thus supporting them to ‘get better’ at PE.

An extensive extra-curricular provision also provides further challenge and access to a range of physical activity. Children learn in a safe environment and have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.
