Intent

Foster and develop a hunger and curiosity for life-long learning and enthusiasm for knowledge about French.
  • To foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world through a structured programme of learning – Salut.
  • Express ideas and thoughts in another language.
  • Learn new ways of thinking.
  • Engage and prepare our children to continue language learning at Secondary School.
  • Inspire children to want to take their language studies to the next stage (GCSE).

We will equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills in French that they need for further learning and in adult life.
  • Provide the foundation for learning further languages.
  • Equip children to study and work in other countries.
  • Provide children with the grammatical and vocabulary skills to read, write and orally express themselves in another language.
  • The teaching of French in KS2 will provide a balance of spoken and written language and lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at KS3.

We want to develop the personal character and attributes of our young people so that they are confident and happy language speakers of the future.
  • Give children time, through using a variety of different resources, to develop their spoken and written French allowing them to engage confidently with others.
  • Expose children to different written information, allowing children to read and discuss with confidence and skill.

Enrich pupils’ lives through a variety of experiences so that they can make informed choices for their own future interests.
  • Essential skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing will be embedded through using a range of different experiences with other schools.
  • To reinforce key vocabulary taught through the use of games, songs, stories and discussion.

A French curriculum that is relevant and meaningful to young people that are growing up in Burbage today.
  • Children will learn to appreciate similarities and differences between cultures.
Implementation
Teachers use a variety of techniques enabling pupils to have an active engagement within their modern foreign language lessons.  This includes games, role-play and action songs. Lessons include introductions to key vocabulary for each lesson, flashcards to support learning, as well as games and songs to reinforce the learning objective. The ‘Salut’ scheme is organised into units of work; three core units, followed by multiple units which cover children’s day-to-day routines, as well as their interests and home life.
We look to extend our language learning wherever possible.  For example, by asking children to share the languages which they speak at home.

We believe that when children leave Sketchley Hill, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages, welcoming that, in a multilingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language. They will therefore be engaged and prepared to continue their language learning journey at Secondary School.
