Implementation
Teaching & Learning styles: A variety of teaching and learning methods are used to enable pupils to experience working as individuals, in groups and as a whole class. Pupils engage in practical work: exploring various materials, ideas and techniques; responding imaginatively through drawing, painting, using ICT and modelling. Children are given the opportunity both to share their own ideas and listen to those of other children - treating these with respect. Children critically evaluate existing artwork, their own work and that of others.
Inclusion: All children have the opportunity to participate fully in art lessons and activities. In all classes there are children of differing ability and needs. We provide suitable learning opportunities for all by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the individual: objectives may be selected from earlier or later stages of the National Curriculum when necessary, to enable individual pupils to progress and demonstrate achievement. Pupils engage with work of artists of both sexes as well as work from a variety of ethnic backgrounds: such material is presented in a context which is suitable to the pupil’s age. Children who demonstrate a clear ability in a particular area are engaged in workshops for Gifted and Talented children where this is deemed relevant.
Curriculum Planning: Art is taught through meaningful activities which are delivered through the Curiosity Curriculum. Tasks are designed to promote the development of skills and knowledge as children progress through the school, as set out in the National Curriculum. The Curriculum Map indicates the nature of the tasks covered in each term during each Key Stage. In Foundation Stage the objectives linked to Art are related to the objectives of the Early Learning Goals.
Links to Other Subjects: The Curiosity Curriculum adopted in 2019 allows a clear link between Art and all other curriculum areas. Our curriculum supports children in communicating knowledge and understanding gained from other curriculum areas. Medium term planning and termly overviews in each year group highlight where art links in with the main theme for the term and indeed how the other subjects support Art and vice versa.
The children's learning is further enhanced with whole school ‘Burbage Community Arts Day’ when the children have the opportunity for collaborative working and exploring the different styles and techniques of a range of artists.
Impact
Children develop their techniques and awareness of different types of art. Children use technical vocabulary accurately and pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the skills and processes specified. Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art. Children improve their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. All children in school can speak confidently about their art and design work and their skills.
